I'm John Adams, a wedding and destination event photographer based in Newcastle and working across the Hunter Valley, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, the Central Coast and Sydney. I've been photographing weddings for over thirty years — thousands of them now — and I still get the same nervous energy before every single one. Photography isn't just my profession — it's the way I connect with the world around me. I've always believed the most beautiful moments happen naturally: the quiet exchanges between loved ones, the laughter, the fleeting glances of pure emotion. My goal is to capture those moments and preserve them forever as timeless, elegant images that tell the story of your love.
But the story starts long before Newcastle. For the better part of a decade I worked across the UK, Europe and the United States — freelancing for Canon and Disney, shooting for glossy magazines and global brands, and learning my craft in studios and on location in London, Paris, Rome and New York. It was a formative, fast-paced chapter that taught me how to read light in any condition, work quietly under pressure, and deliver for clients who expected nothing less than perfection. I returned from Europe in 2000, settled on the NSW coast, and founded Dreams Photography — turning a career behind the lens into a life dedicated to weddings.
I grew up on the Newcastle coastline and I have been photographing it since I was old enough to hold a camera. I know the way the light falls on Nobbys at 4pm in July, and the way it falls on Merewether at 7pm in January. I know which Hunter Valley vineyards face west and which face north, and what that means for your golden hour. I know that the southerly comes in at Newcastle Beach almost every afternoon in summer, and I know which beaches to move to when it does. That kind of local knowledge is not something you can learn from a website — it comes from thirty years of standing on these beaches and in these vineyards with a camera in my hands.
From a boutique studio in Newcastle, I work closely with you from the first consultation to the final curated collection. I am a member of the Master Photographer Association (MPA) — one of the most respected professional bodies for photographers in the world, recognised internationally for its exacting standards — and I carry full public liability insurance. These are the kind of things that matter when you are trusting someone with the only record of your wedding day. I also work alongside a small, trusted team: Jen, my second photographer for the past seven years, and Claire, my album designer and editor. We are a small operation by design — I limit the number of weddings I take on each year so every couple gets the attention they deserve.
Travel is my first love. I've been fortunate to photograph weddings in some of the most beautiful destinations around the world — a rustic villa in Tuscany, a serene beachfront in the Caribbean, a chateau in the south of France. But no matter where I go, I always come back to Newcastle. The coastline here is the one I know best, and the Hunter Valley is the wine region I have photographed more than any other. If you are getting married anywhere between the Central Coast and Port Stephens, I would love to hear from you.
