Perched on Merewether Beach with 180-degree ocean views, the Surfhouse is Newcastle's most cinematic coastal venue — raw surf culture meets architectural elegance, with the Pacific as a built-in backdrop from every angle.

01
The setting
The building sits literally on the beach, with floor-to-ceiling glass wrapping the ocean side. The interiors are clean and modern, designed to frame the view rather than compete with it. The scale is flexible — intimate gatherings to 350-guest celebrations.
02
The light
East-facing over the ocean means the Surfhouse catches clean morning light and dramatic afternoon weather. Golden hour here is open and coastal — the sun drops behind the city, throwing warm light back across the beach and the building. Blue hour over the water is the signature shot.
03
The flow
A ceremony on the beach or inside with ocean views, cocktails watching the surf, then dinner in the event space with the water still in frame. The single-location venue means the coastal backdrop stays with you all day.
Photographer's perspective
A note on the light
The Surfhouse is the venue I shoot at most in Newcastle — it is my home beach, and I know every angle of that building. The east-facing glass means morning ceremonies are soft and clean, but my favourite time is the hour after sunset, when the blue hour over the ocean turns the water silver and the building's interior light glows warm against it. It is the most cinematic coastal venue in the city.
