Sandstone steps above Burwood Beach, Hickson Street Lookout is a coastal ceremony spot inside a state conservation area — raw bushland, ocean cliff and the wide Pacific as far as the eye can see.

01
The setting
The lookout is a simple sandstone platform above the beach, surrounded by coastal bushland. There's no built structure — just the landscape. It's a ceremony-only location, chosen by couples who want the wild, unmediated coast as their backdrop.
02
The light
Being south-facing above the ocean means the light here is clean and open — no buildings to block it, no streets to reflect it. Late afternoon throws warm light across the cliff face and the bushland, while the ocean stays cool and blue. The exposure means weather is part of every frame.
03
The flow
A ceremony on the lookout as the sun drops, then a short drive to a reception venue in Newcastle or Lake Macquarie. The lookout is a ceremony-only location, so the day flows from the coast inward.
Photographer's perspective
A note on the light
Hickson Street Lookout is the ceremony spot I recommend to couples who want the wild coast without the crowds of Newcastle Beach. The sandstone platform above Burwood Beach is exposed — there is no shelter, no power, no backup — so I always tell couples to have a weather plan and to keep the ceremony short. But when the light is right, the cliff face and the ocean behind you is the most dramatic ceremony backdrop in Newcastle.
