Nestled along Throsby Creek and framed by majestic Moreton Bay fig trees planted in 1880, Islington Park is described by the council itself as 'a beautiful, lesser known ceremony location' — expansive lawns and historic character in a quiet, grounded setting.

01
The setting
The park sits along Throsby Creek, framed by a magnificent stand of Moreton Bay fig trees first planted in 1880. The expansive lawns and historic character give it a quiet, grounded feel — the kind of place where a small ceremony feels like it belongs rather than being staged. It is a ceremony-only location, chosen by couples who want something genuinely off the beaten path.
02
The light
The fig canopy filters the light into something almost stained-glass — dappled, soft and shifting with the wind. The creek adds a natural reflector on still days, throwing light back up into the branches. Late afternoon is when the figs are at their best, the low sun catching the leaves and the lawns in warm stripes.
03
The flow
A ceremony beneath the fig trees, portraits along the creek, then a short drive to a reception venue in Islington or Hamilton. The park is a ceremony-only location, but its position means the inner-city restaurants and bars of Hamilton and Beaumont Street are only minutes away.
Photographer's perspective
A note on the light
Islington Park is the most under-the-radar ceremony spot in Newcastle, and I mean that as a compliment. The fig trees along Throsby Creek are enormous — they create a cathedral of branches overhead that filters the light into something almost stained-glass. I have shot elopements there where the only sound was the creek and the birds. It is not a polished venue, and that is exactly why the couples who choose it love it. Bring a picnic blanket and let the trees do the work.
